Our Under 17 side clinched the SWJCL Zone B league title after defeating Clydach by 6 wickets at Marespool this evening (3rd)!
The winning margin, apparently comfortable enough, masks a terrific game of cricket which could have gone either way until the very end!
Batting first, Clydach totalled 100-5 from their 20 overs. After being reduced to 4-2 early on, Clydach did recover somewhat. Mike Jarrett (2-11), Adam Lewis-Williams (1-13), Gethin Morgan (1-9) & Tomos Williams (1-11) were the wicket-takers.
Five an over at HQ is barely a par score for this age group, many of whom already play Senior league cricket. However, our visitors, who had not won a game this season, were not going to just go through the motions in the field. “Fight” is the ‘F’ word for this historic club!
In reply, we lost lost an early wicket..9-1. Captain Sean Davies (29, 5 fours) and Adam steadied some nerves before Clydach’s pressure saw wickets fall at 51 & 63. Jack Rymer joined Adam to add 32 invaluable runs, before Jack was runout for 9..95-4 now! Adam was going well however, when he & Tomos Williams combined to get the job done..Adam 44no (5 fours), Tomos a crucial boundary 4 not out!
So, ok, MCC did win in the end..102-4, but with only two balls of the game remaining, it was that close!
The reward is a home semi-final play-off tie against Maesteg Celtic next Tuesday (10th). The winners of the semi-finals will go through to contest the SWJCL U17 League Cup Final later this month.
