Under 16s Fall at Final Hurdle

Our Under 16s were defeated by 9 wickets when they took on Carmarthen Wanderers at Pontarddulais C.C. in the South Wales Junior Cricket U16s League Final for the  Bill Edwards Cup.

After being put in to bat on a low slow wicket, Mumbles suffered an early setback when Jack Lee was dismissed in the first over. Ross Greenwood with a brisk 29, and skipper Ieuan Rosser  pushed the score along to 42 for 1 from 8 overs against some accurate Carmarthen bowling, before Greenwood was brilliantly caught by Brooke off spinner Owain Binding. Rosser was then run out for 13 , and with Luke Brown quickly departing Mumbles found themselves in trouble at 51 for 4 from 12 overs.  A run a ball partnership of 59 for the 5th wicket between Ben Francis (27) and Matthew Shepherd (32) saw Mumbles regain the initiative and close on 113 for 6 from thier 20 overs.

When Carmarthen batted, openers Jack Maynard and Daniel Jones totally dominated the Mumbles attack, putting on 111 for the 1st wicket. Skipper Rosser rotated his bowlers to good effect, but was unable to find the key to unlocking the partnership. Whilst Jones was content to steadily accumulate for his 37, Maynard proceded to attack the bowling with a succession of powerful strokes in his innings of 72*, seeing the Wanderers home for the loss of one wicket with his 13th boundary in the 17th over.
