For the last eleven years Mumbles Cricket has been the proud host and supporter of the Annual Macmarathon Round Gower Walk for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 2018 Walk alone has raised over £260,000 and more than 1100 walkers, their families and friends celebrated and recovered at our Marespool Cricket Ground.

Many Mumbles Cricket players and members take part with their families and friends.

The Macmarathon route provides some of the most breathtaking and spectacular scenery, incorporating stunning golden beaches. The 22 mile walk starts at Rhossili Bay and follows the coastline on a well marked route which finishes at the Cricket Club for a celebratory and party atmosphere.  There is also a shorter 14 mile walk which starts at Port Eynon and finishes in the same place.

For further details including how to register to take part, please visit Macmillan’s website - Planning is already well in hand for the 2019 Walk on 14th September and website registrations will open from March. Please note that it is not possible to register via our Club.

History of The Event

The Gower Macmarathon was started in 1998 by members of the Swansea voluntary committee of Macmillan Cancer Support. There were originally 20 people who were themselves keen walkers and since then the event has grown to the size it is today. The Annual Round Gower Walk is now Macmillan’s biggest individual fund-raising event in the UK!  Indeed, the total amount raised during the history of the Walk thus far exceeds £1.7m!

Numbers are capped in order to protect the coastal path so it is advisable to register early.

What It Means

With 1 in 3 of us are affected by cancer,  events like the Gower Macmarathon provide vital sponsorship which is used to fund local services in the area.  Macmillan provides specialist Macmillan nurses, other health professionals including Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, G.P’s.  It also provides financial support via Grants as well as information on cancer on the website.  It has an  information telephone helpline (0808 808 0000).  Following requests from companies who work in partnership with the charity, Macmillan launched, The Essential Work and Cancer Toolkit this year, which gives guidance on cancer in the workplace for employers, employees and carers.

None of these Macmillan services could be funded without the support of local fundraisers.

Paul Sykes a regular supporter of the walk -

“I have taken part in the Gower Macmarathon Walk since 2009.  Having lost my wife Jane to cancer, my daughter Anna and I formed the Friends of Jane Sykes group to walk the 22 miles of Gower Coastline in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Having had first hand experience of cancer we know how important it is to raise funds to enable Macmillan to keep improving local cancer services and provide help to families coping with the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.  Doing the Gower Macmarathon not only does this but provides a focal point for friends and family to get together and enjoy a great day out amongst the Gower scenery whilst ensuring more families can receive help in the future”.

There is a loyal band of volunteers behind this wonderful event, without whom it could not go ahead.  If you would like to offer your support on the day please make the call!  Macmillan Cancer Support: 0300 1000 200.
